ADVANTA ANGLING DOWNRIGGERS

The right tackle for the job.
Downriggers
Ever fished in fast water and big tides and been frustrated? You know the fish are there but you
can't get to them?
Years ago, before we discovered downriggers, squashed five abreast, knees wedged under the
transom, 30lb rods, 6lb sash weights on rotten bottoms, all to latch onto the enormous bass that
frequented the Portland Race, St. Catherine's Point and the Alderney Race in The Channel. Yes we
caught bass, lots of them, but was it fun? At the time we thought it was, but then we were young
and a twelve pound bass was a fish to remember. And so it was killed, photographed and eaten.
Then we discovered downriggers, we got out the carp rods, Mitchell 386's, loaded them with
15-20lb line, bought the biggest rapalas we could find and trolled them through the same waters.
We caught even bigger bass, used even lighter lines and in a stroke found out how hard a fish
can really fight in fast water. And because we were catching so many, we started tag and
release. There isn't a better feeling than watching a big fish swim back to the depths. Since
then of course we now have specialist bass rods, fabulous multipliers and co-po lines. They all
do a much better job, so now most of the fish go back except for the odd two pounder for the
table.
The modern downrigger has come a long way from those early days, so much so that we never go to
sea without one. We have found a range in America that suits British waters to perfection -
simple design well made, manual or electric, small boat or large, easy to use and reasonably
priced.
